Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
